IONIC
Ionic Technologies, originally known as Seren Technologies, is a spin-out company from Queen's University Belfast.
Background
In 2022, Ionic transitioned to becoming the magnet recycling subsidiary wholly owned by Ionic Rare Earths Limited (ASX: IXR). During this transition, they moved into a new manufacturing unit and, although staffed with university graduates, they required strategic direction. This need was addressed by appointing a General Manager, tasked with leading the site and building out the team.
The Challenge
Upon rebranding and relocating, Ionic Technologies faced significant hurdles: they were unfamiliar with the local market and lacked brand awareness in Northern Ireland, heavily relying on their connection to Queen's University Belfast. The company needed to establish a branded marketing presence and create a network to grow alongside the company.
The Solution
MCS proposed a retained recruitment approach to address the hiring needs effectively:
A retainer was established, resulting in five candidates reaching the final stage, with one ultimately offered the position and starting. This key hire helped build the foundational team.
Another significant role was filled in Manchester, involving a VP for EU & UK focusing on sales, marking the second employee, with their role specification being coordinated over to Australia.
The recruitment drive also included 16 other roles spanning finance, engineering, science, health and safety, and HR.
The initial recruitment for the General Manager role was handled as a retained project to ensure focused and dedicated efforts. This approach facilitated the necessary buy-in to kick off strategic marketing and recruitment, managed exclusively by MCS.
Results
The recruitment efforts led to substantial growth for Ionic Technologies:
Total Placements: 18
Interviews Conducted: 50
CVs Sent: 82
This strategy enabled Ionic Technologies to double in size within 12 months and laid the groundwork for potential expansion into additional premises.
