After spending the past few years studying full-time, in pretty challenging circumstances too, you are now you are ready to search for that first role out of University, but are probably thinking where do I start?
For many people looking for a job can turn into a full-time job but at MCS Group we have worked with thousands of Graduates and employers, so we know how to take some of the stress out and make your job search structured, effective and less overwhelming. Here are our top tips for making your job search successful!
It’s Ok to take some time out – the past 2 years have been tough on everyone and with remote learning, not everyone has had the typical University experience so it’s ok to take a couple of weeks off to destress and relax after graduation to clear the head. After your break, you can kick off the job search refreshed and on the front foot.
Strategize
sit down and carefully think about the type of role that you wish to move into, the type of employer you want to work for and also location as these will be the foundations of your job search. For example, if you graduated in Accountancy do you want to work in risk or audit? Do you want to work for a large employer like a corporate or a smaller organisation? Do you want to work in an office or remote? All these factors will determine where to focus your energy and time.
Research
Good research in a job search normally makes the difference in being successful, from figuring out the role you want, where you wish to work and from what location you can then identify which companies fit the criteria. By establishing a target list of companies you can then start to find who are the people you need to speak with should it be HR or Recruitment or is it something more technical like a CTO? You may be able to find someone you know who works there who can refer you, referrals in many industries carry a lot of weight as recommendations.
Have an up-to-date CV
It may be a few months since you’ve looked at your CV or you may not even have created one but an up-to-date CV is an essential tool in the job search. A great CV will act as a door opener showing individuals or organisations your skills, academic history, employment history and achievements making you stand out in the crowd. It’s also best practice to tailor your CV to the job that you are applying for highlighting more relevant experience or skills.
Network
the idea of networking may be new or foreign to many but it is a great way to make introductions to relevant employers or professionals who may be able to connect you to your next opportunity. LinkedIn is a great way to network with professionals in relevant industries, and companies and with fellow professionals quickly and it also gives you access across the world. In-person events like MeetUps are a great way to meet people in person and slightly more informally where you can hear from industry speakers and create relationships with other attendees.
Speak to Recruiters
Recruiters and Recruitment Agencies are experts in what they do, they will be able to advise you on salary, skills, and current opportunities and make introductions to their clients on your behalf. A preconception many people have is that Recruitment Agencies charge candidates for their services so many people haven’t considered using an Agency before, they don’t, Agencies only charge clients if a candidate is placed meaning it’s in their interest to find you a job!
Be patient
Searching for a new job can be tough and it can take time even for the most seasoned professional so be patient, by being patient you’ll also be more relaxed and make better decisions. Being patient can also mean creating a routine for yourself such as job searching for a few hours each day, setting yourself tasks like sending out your CV to a certain number of employers each day or completing a certain number of application forms each day. This approach of breaking the search down into smaller steps will help you feel less overwhelmed.
